Candidate filing begins in Aurora, Naperville, Wheaton

With the dust still settling from the presidential election, officials in DuPage County and Aurora already are gearing up for local elections in the spring. The filing period for candidates seeking municipal posts in Aurora, Naperville and Wheaton begins today and continues through Nov. 28. Filing in those towns starts earlier than in others because if more than four candidates pursue any one post, a Feb. 28 primary will be needed to winnow the field.

Aurora officer accused of faking overtime work

A veteran Aurora police officer is charged with theft and facing termination after department officials accused her of faking extra work to get overtime compensation. Kimberly R. Hanson, 43, of Plano, has been on administrative leave since Oct. 3. She was charged with theft earlier this month and a warrant was issued Nov. 3. She turned herself into the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Nov. 8 and posted a $100 bail, according to Aurora Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli.

Auction at Geneva church raises $4,000 for local organizations

During Halloween weekend, Raul Castillo, a Hispanic author and educator, used a not so scary witch to bring home the point to Spanish-speaking families in his book "La Bruja Que No Fue A La Escuela" the importance of reading and writing at the offices of Ponce Reyna Agency/Farmers Insurance in Aurora, Illinois. Dressed in festive costumes, the agency's staff welcomed 25 families to personally meet Castillo and learn more about his book.

McMahon looks ahead to 2nd full term as top Kane prosecutor

Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said Tuesday his second full term will include establishing a Conviction Integrity Unit to examine cases where new evidence arises after appeals have been exhausted, and expanding Crisis Intervention Training for officers. During his tenure, McMahon, a former prosecutor who was appointed state's attorney in late 2010, has emphasized aggressive handling of career criminals and cases involving violent crime but has expanded pretrial diversion programs for first-time offenders.
